Three Possible Scenarios for Manny Machado

Looking ahead to the 2018 MLB trade deadline, one player that could be on the move is Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. Machado will be a hot item in trade talks as he is in the final year of his contract.

Machado, this season, is hitting a .350 batting average, with 13 home runs and has driven in 38 RBIs. Machado would make a big impact to any team’s lineup and he is no slouch on the defensive end. The one key thing in making a trade for him is trying to sign him to a contract extension so he doesn’t become a rental player for the season. Here are three trade scenarios that could put him on a new team for the rest of this season:

The first trade scenario would involve the Orioles and the New York Yankees. The Yankees would send shortstop Didi Gregorius, a proven Major Leaguer, right hand pitcher Chance Adams, and infielder Thairo Estrada to Baltimore. Adams is the Yankees sixth best prospect and Estrada is the 10th ranked prospect in their organization. Machado going to the Yankees would give them a deadly line up with him, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, and Gary Sanchez in the middle of the lineup. Machado would bolster their infield with stellar glove work.

The next trade scenario would send Machado to the Chicago Cubs. In return, Baltimore would receive shortstop Addison Russell, right hand pitcher Jose Albertos, who is the Cubs fourth best prospect, and outfielder D.J. Wilson, who is the Cubs eighth ranked prospect. With this trade, it would give the Cubs a lineup of Machado, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo giving them a player adept at taking a little off his swings just to get on base as well as long ball ability. For the Orioles, it would give them a shortstop with experience in Russell and farm system depth with these two prospects.

The final trade scenario would be the Arizona Diamondbacks getting some protection for Paul Goldschmidt by acquiring a bat like Machado from the Orioles. The Diamondbacks would also receive catcher Caleb Joseph who would be an upgrade at the position as their current catchers are hitting .200 ot less. In return, the O’s would receive three of Arizona’s top prospects with first baseman Pavin Smith, who their number one prospect, infielder Domingo Leyabao, ranked sixth, and outfielder Socrates Brito, ranked tenth. With these prospects, it would allow the Orioles to start rebuilding for the future. It would also give the Diamondbacks more of a punch offensively as they hope to make a deep run this year.

All three of these trades would benefit each of them teams involved. The trades would give some teams a promising future while others get the immediate impact bat that is Machado. Now it’s time to wait and see where he will be traded or if he stays with the Orioles.
