Most gruesome sports injuries in the last 10 years

Injuries suck plain and simple. There have been many athletes who have had injuries that cut short their careers. Injuries are a part of the game, from Bill Walton, to Bo Jackson, and even Yao Ming, anyone is susceptible.

Kevin Ware (2013)

Kevin Ware had one of the most gruesome injuries that have happened in recent years. The injury occurred during the NCAA Tournament. Ware’s Louisville Cardinals were facing off against Duke in the Elite 8.

Ware was going for a block attempt against guard Tyler Thornton. When he came down his leg snapped. Ware suffered from an open fracture in which the bone was sticking out being exposed.

This injury was one of the hardest injuries to watch as players, coaches and fans alike were stunned and could not believe that they have seen, even bringing some to tears.

Anderson “The Spider” Silva (2013)

Anderson Silva’s horrific injury occurred on December¬† 28th, 2013 during the UFC 168 Pay-Per-View. Silva was in a rematch against then-champion at the time Chris Weidman.

During the fight, Silva went in for a kick on Weidman’s leg and Weidman checked it. After the kick, Silva went down holding his leg in pain subsequently ending the fight.

The result of the injury was that Silva had a fracture of his tibia and fibula. Silva would have orthopedic surgery right after which was successful and he is still fighting to this day.

Paul George (2014)

Paul George’s injury is another injury that is scary to watch. In the 2014 offseason, George was named to the training camp roster of the 2014 Fiba Basketball World Cup.

In the middle of a scrimmage, George went up for a block on James Harden and drew the foul. George landed very awkwardly on the bottom of the stanchion. It came back that George suffered a compound fracture.

He was immediately carted off the court and went right into surgery. Since the injury, George has made a 100% full recovery and is still in the league currently playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Alex McKinnon (2014)

Rugby is one of the most dangerous sports in the world as the athletes wear no pads, unlike other sports, so the chance of injury is very high.

Alex McKinnon was an unfortunate recipient of one of those injuries. McKinnon suffered a broken neck after taking a tackle which resulted in his head being driven hard into the ground.

This tackle would fracture two of McKinnon’s vertebrae causing him to become paralyzed right then and there.

Making it one of the most horrific scenes, causing him to become a quadriplegic and change his life forever.

Gordon Hayward (2017)

After signing a four year $128 million contract, Gordon Hayward was ready to start his season with a fresh start with the Boston Celtics. Unfortunately, his first season did not turn out that way.

In the first game of the regular season against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hayward was going up for an alley-oop, He missed the pass from KyrieIrving and Hayward landed very awkwardly causing his leg to collapse under his weight.

The doctors reported that Hayward had a fractured Tibia and dislocated ankle, this injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Hayward has made a full recovery since the injury and is still playing for the Celtics.

Zach Miller (2017)

A Chicago Bears tight end had one of the scariest leg injuries that you will ever see. When you watch it in regular motion it does not look that bad. But if you watch it in slow motion it looks pretty nasty as Miller’s leg bent back in an unusual manner.

Miller’s injury happened when he caught a touchdown pass. You could tell something was wrong as he was holding his leg in pain.

It was later revealed that Miller did not only dislocate his left knee, but he tore his popliteal artery. The injury was so bad the Miller almost had to have his leg amputated.

Miller has emergency surgery and doctors were able to save Miller’s leg.

Samir Ait Said (2016)

Samit Air Said is a French gymnast who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Ait Said suffered a double compound fracture while he was competing on the vault causing his leg to snap.

The injury forced him to pull his name out of the Olympic games.

Sebastien Courcelles (2014)

Hockey is a dangerous sport from Clint Malarchuk to  Max Pacioretty, players have suffered injuries, some even so bad that it could have been deadly.

Sebastien Courcelles injury was definitely one of the scariest. Courcelles was playing in the semi-pro Canadian league.

Courcelles fell on the ice and face landed on the Jean-Michael Bolduc’s skate, this caused a deep gash in his face.

Courcelles was rushed to the hospital and received 15 stitches on his face.
