National Signing Day Winners and Losers

Winners

Alabama

The rich get richer, don’t they?

247sports gave the Crimson Tide the No. 1 recruiting class as the SEC champions reclaim the top spot after falling to fifth last year. The Tide racked up 23 four-star recruits, which is by far the most of any school.

One of the highlights of the day was stealing Louisiana native and four-star DE Ishmael Sopsher from division rival LSU. The Tide’s haul also includes three of the top 10 overall players in the country: DE Antonio Alfano, RB Trey Sanders and, OT Evan Neal. The lone three-star recruit just so happens to be Will Reichard, the No. 1-rated kicker in the entire country.

Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs ended the day with the No. 2 recruiting class and five five-star recruits, which is the most in the country. One of the biggest pickups of the day was George Pickens, a five-star wide receiver from Hoover, Alabama, who had originally committed to Auburn but flipped to Georgia on National Signing Day. Pickens joins a recruiting class featuring DE Nolan Smith, 247sports’ No. 1 overall recruit, LB Nakobe Dean and OL Clay Webb.

Purdue

They might not have any five stars, but the Boilermakers made a huge jump and had one of their best-recruiting classes ever. Just last year, the Boilermakers ranked 51st. This year, they’re 25th with much credit going to coach Jeff Brohm.

Whoever plays quarterback next year is going to have a plethora of talent outside in Rondale Moore. The Boilermakers signed four-star receivers David Bell and Milton Wright.

Tennessee

Despite going 5-7 last season, the Tennessee Volunteers amassed the No. 12 recruiting class in the country. The Volunteers picked up Darnell Wright, who 247sports ranks as the second-best offensive tackle in the entire country. That makes two five-star offensive linemen for Tennessee with the other being Wanya Morris from Loganville, Georgia. Rocky Top also picked up Henry To’oto’o, a four-star linebacker over their SEC West Division rival Alabama.

Losers

Florida State

Willie Taggart’s tenure as head coach isn’t exactly panning out to what the Seminoles want it to be. Just days after Deondre Francois was released from the team, the Seminoles lost four-star QB Lance LeGendre to Mike Locksley’s Maryland.

Now, it appears as though Florida State is down to James Blackman at quarterback with no backup behind him. The Noles have a class good enough for 16th on 247sports’ rankings, but they are starting to have an emergency at quarterback depth.

Ohio State

The Ohio State finished the day with three five-star recruits and the 14th-best class overall. That’s not a bad day. But it does appear that they have slipped compared to their conference rivals.

The Buckeyes had the No. 2 overall recruiting class a year ago, but now they’ve fallen behind Penn State and Michigan. The Wolverines have 14 four-star recruits, the Nittany Lions have 17 four-star recruits, but the Buckeyes have just nine. Ohio State is a perennial power in the Big 10, but it’s starting to see the effects of not having Urban Meyer at head coach anymore.
