Keeping it in the family. Sports is full of sibling rivalries, the most recent happening on the rink.
On February 24, brothers Brady Tkachuk of the Ottawa Senators and Matthew Tkachuk of the Calgary Flames played head-to-head against each other. While the play may not have been memorable it got us thinking. What are the best sibling rivalries in sports?
Eli and Peyton Manning
One of the most memorable sibling rivalries comes in the NFL between Eli Manning of the New York Giants and Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos. The first matchup between these two brothers ended with Peyton going 276 passing yards as opposed to Eli’s 247. However, Eli had two touchdowns compared to Peyton’s one and both brothers threw an interception. This was the closest statistical battle between the two. Peyton vastly outperformed Eli in the pair’s other two games. Peyton has a 3-0 record against his brother.
Eric and Marc Staal
Eric Staal has played for three teams in the NHL: the New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and currently plays for the Minnesota Wild. His brother Marc spent the entirety of his NHL career playing for the Rangers. After being teammates on the Rangers, Eric became a Hurricane. Thus, the climax of the rivalry between the two siblings occurred.
This hit ended up leaving Marc out indefinitely with a concussion. Eric spoke out months after the hit while Marc was still out. He said, “If I could take it back I probably wouldn’t hit him knowing where we’ve gone and what has gone on since then. But it was one of those plays, bang-bang, happens so quickly, and I hit him hard.”
B.J. and Justin Upton
B.J. and Justin Upton played together on the Braves, which is what the siblings are most known for. This play is one of the most memorable of theirs on the Braves.
Even when on the same team, Justin wanted to one-up his brother as you can see in the video.
There’s also plenty of stories such as both brothers suffering muscle strains in the same game. Also, both brothers hitting their 100th career home run in the same night. The brothers broke the record for most games by a pair of brothers in which both hit a home run with five in 2014.
Serena and Venus Williams
Serena and Venus WIlliams are widely regarded as some of the best tennis players ever. The siblings have played against each other a whopping 30 times. Currently, Serena leads the series between the two 18-12, the record is 10-5 in favor of Serena in Grand Slams. Serena versus Venus Williams may easily be one of the most impactful and intense sibling rivalries in sports. It’s simple, they play each other frequently. In addition, the record between the two is close.
