NBA: Landing Spots for Zion Williamson

With the NBA draft coming up, Zion Williamson is looking like he will be the consensus number one pick. With the new odds in the draft lottery, the three worst teams all have a 14% chance at getting picks 1-4.

Williamson is arguably the most hyped college prospect in years. The best possible way to build around Zion is to have a good shot creator, defenders, coach, and  shooters

So with the teams in the lottery which team would be the best fit for Williamson. Also, would which team would help take his skills to the next level?

Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks seem to be the best fit on paper for Williamson. The Hawks had one of the fastest paces in the league this season. This could help Zion and his development as he could get easy points in while in transition.

Trae Young also looks like he will be a very good point guard in the future from his playmaking and shot creating. the only problem with the fit could be John Collins, even though Collins has shown flashes to be a stretch 5. The Hawks also have Kevin Huerter on the team who is a good three point shooter.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks are another team in which Williamson could flourish. The team has Luka Doncic seems like the perfect shot creator and scorer for the team and Kristaps Porzingis can stretch the floor and a great defender, not to mention they have Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jalen Brunson who can both good shooters. Williamson and Doncic can slash to the rim and pass it out to Porzigis for three.

Dallas also has a great coach in Rick Carlisle. The only problem is the draft lottery odds. The team has only a 6% chance at their pick landing in the top 3 and a 26.3 chance that their pick lands in the top four. If their pick falls out of the top five then it goes to the Hawks so their odds of getting the Duke freshman does not look good.

The mix of those three could cause problems as well. Porzingis like playing in isolation and likes playing from the elbow. But with the front office and coach, they would most likely work everything out.

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks had the worst record in the NBA and are tied with the Cavaliers and Suns of the best lottery odds.

Williamson would have the Knicks with scoring in the paint. The team ranked last in two-point percentage and Williamson shot 75.2% from the two-point percentage. Williamson would also increase the ratings in New York and all eyes would be on him.

The problem with this fit is that the team really do not have the pieces to build around Williamson. New York is looking like they are taking the step in the right direction but there can still be seen some concern is they don’t take the steps to build around him.

Chicago Bulls

If the Bulls draft Williamson they would immediately have a nice group of young guys. With Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen, Wendell Carter Jr. and Otto Porter Jr.

With those young players, Bulls management could evaluate them and see how they all fit together and can benefit everybody.

There can be a problem with too many young players especially if they are under the age of 25 as they will be fighting to earn a big contract and proving that they belong in the league.

The fit can work if Williamson is able to play a small ball five role, while playing next to Lauri Markkanen as he is a stretch four which can help Williamson develop his strengths.

You would also see a  pairing of Wendell Carter Jr and Zion Williamson which could be a very good defensive frontcourt.

If Chicago does somehow draft Williamson they would also need to bring in a point guard who is very good at passing.

If Williamson’s skills can develop into the NBA, whatever team drafts him could be one of the best draft picks and can possibly be the best player in the 2019 draft class.
