The United States Men’s National Soccer Team is set to defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup title. The U.S. is co-hosting the tournament alongside Costa Rica and Jamaica. The tournament begins on the 15th of June and for the first time ever, the tournament will feature 16 teams. With a win the USMNT would secure their seventh title, tying Mexico for most all-time.
The USMNT is still haunted by their failure to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Since missing out on the World Cup, the team has been rebuilding. The 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup is their first big test since the beginning of that rebuild.
If the USMNT manages to win the tournament and retain the title, it’ll prove that progress is certainly being made. With only five players on the U.S. roster with over 40 caps, the U.S. is coming with a young team without much experience. Again, this is part of the rebuilding process.
Three Keys To Retaining The Title:
Win the Group
The U.S. is drawn alongside Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. This is a very tough challenge for the USMNT. Panama’s roster includes several players who were on the Panamanian squad that participated in the World Cup last summer. Trinidad and Tobago is the reason for the USMNT’s failure to qualify for the World Cup. Guyana, on the other hand, is making their first appearance in the tournament.
The USMNT has to win their Group at all costs. Playing against the likes of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Panama certainly brings painful memories, but the USMNT has to focus on the future and not the past.
Acquire a winning mentality
A winning mentality is a top priority for the USMNT. In other words, it’s the vital key to a victory. If they can find a winning mentality it’ll allow them to gain another key to victory; control. It’s a step-by-step process that helps the team without inflicting serious pressure which can possibly lead to a downward spiral. At this point, the USMNT can’t afford any more negativity.
A USMNT with a useful and effective winning mentality grants them control of the pitch. To have control of the pitch paves the way to a resounding victory which grants the team an extra boost of confidence and motivation. Ultimately, leads to another title.
Be ready for anything
The USMNT cannot afford to take anybody lightly. Underestimating any team they square off against is a costly mistake. A lesson they learned after failing to qualify for the World Cup.
Looking to redeem themselves from past mistakes, the USMNT is hoping to go from disappointment to success. The team is under a bit of pressure because the team lacks experience. However, the team certainly has some talent and that talent is going to be put to the test. The USMNT is currently building a new golden generation.
The USMNT plays its first game against Guyana. They’re ready to begin traveling the road to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup is the first obstacle they have to overcome before they began their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The future begins now.
