Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season is finally in the books. That means there are two weeks’ worth of fantasy football data to sort through. And though that may not be enough to really separate the contenders from the pretenders, there is a decent sample size of data to predict player productivity going into Week 3. Everyone has come to expect players like Patrick Mahomes and Saquon Barkley to dominate the fantasy game week in and week out. But who are the unsung heroes that will break out in Week 3? Let’s take a look at some potential sleepers and how they will perform in standard Yahoo (non-PPR) scoring leagues.
Deebo Samuel, Wide Receiver, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers finally looked to be hitting their stride offensively after their Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. And a big part of their offensive game plan was rookie wide receiver Deebo Samuel. He finished the game with 5 receptions for 87 yards and 1 touchdown, leading the team in yards receiving. He also had 2 carries for 7 yards. Offensive guru and head coach of the 49ers Kyle Shanahan looks to be using Samuel not only in the passing game, but on the ground as well on misdirection plays. Now coming into his own and facing a Pittsburgh Steelers secondary that has allowed 640 yards passing through two games, expect Samuel to be “snatching chains” from the defense on Sunday! While only owned in 14% of Yahoo leagues, he will be a solid pick up for Week 3.
Projected Week 3 Stat Line: 7 receptions for 80 yards and 1 touchdown, 2 carries for 25 yards
Projected Week 3 Fantasy Points: 16.5
Justin Jackson, Running Back, Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers are still without Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon who is holding out. That has opened the door for running backs Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson to step up. Ekeler has out touched Jackson 29 to 13 through two games. Jackson however has been uber efficient, gaining a league high 8.9 yards per carry.
The Chargers have a Week 3 match up against the Houston Texans who haven’t been great defending against the run. They have given up 251 yards on the ground in their first two games. That puts them in the bottom 10 of the league in that statistic. Jackson will still likely get fewer attempts than his partner in the backfield for Week 3 but look for him to make the most out of every carry. He is only owned in 33% of Yahoo leagues so chances are he may still be available in your league. He will be a great addition to start at the Flex spot.
Projected Week 3 Stat Line: 9 carries for 76 yards and 1 touchdown, 1 reception for 5 yards
Projected Week 3 Fantasy Points: 14.1
Matthew Stafford, Quarterback, Detroit Lions
Anyone that has watched the NFL for the last decade knows what Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is capable of. But his Lions teams have been highly underwhelming. And that might overshadow his personal performances. Surprisingly, he is owned in a mere 36% of Yahoo leagues. But in a Week 3 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles he is due for a big game. The Eagles have given up 680 yards in the air through two weeks, which is second worst in the league. And it’s only two yards shy from the league worst of 682. Look for Stafford to really exploit the passing game against the porous secondary of the Eagles and light up those fantasy football scoreboards!
Projected Week 3 Stat Line: 28 of 40 for 360 yards, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions
Projected Week 3 Fantasy Points: 26.4
