Is Sign-Stealing Worse Than Intentionally Losing The World Series?

Baseball is America’s favorite past time. Its popularity and history are a great influence on American culture. The list of famous players is endless. Over the years and decades, there have been countless famous moments that have made one impact after another. In other words, baseball is very special. A true American aspect.

However, aside from the baseball’s strong positive impact over the decades, there’s been controversy. Major League Baseball has been around for over a century. In that time, many scandals have surfaced. From steroids to the Pete Rose infamous game-betting scandal, the MLB has had its fair share of scandals.

Up until recently, no scandal had been as infamous as the 1919 Chicago Black Sox Scandal. However, the MLB is currently in an aftermath of a sign-stealing scandal committed by the Houston Astros during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. In addition, the Astros won the World Series in 2017, which intensifies the whole ordeal.

The sign-stealing scandal draws comparison to the Black Sox Scandal. On the other hand, many consider it to be worse than the Black Sox Scandal. One thing is for sure and that’s the fact this greatly affects America’s favorite pastime.

Which Scandal Is Worse?

The Black Sox scandal is about eight players for the Chicago White Sox being paid by a gambling syndicate to throw the 1919 World Series. The Astros sign-stealing scandal is about members of the Astros organization using forms of technology to illegally steal signs of an opposing team, using this method to win the World Series in 2017. In other words, they’re not the same.

The sign-stealing scandal is worse and here’s why; because it is simply about a team cheating to win a title. It’s one thing to agree to intentionally lose in exchange for a profit. However, cheating to win a title is completely different. Furthermore, it’s on a whole different level. It’s not proper to win a championship using illegal tactics, especially when coaches are part of the scheme. It hurts the game and permanently damages the sport’s reputation. In other words, cheating is bad and the consequences are severe and ghastly. Basically, what the Astros did is going to hurt and affect baseball for a long time.

A the end of the day, it doesn’t matter which scandal is worse. They both hurt the game. They leave a permanent stain on the uniform. However, in the Astros’ case, their punishment is quite lenient. While it includes a $5 million fine and forfeiture of first and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021, the fact that none of the players received any punishment is another reason why the sign-stealing scandal is worse than the Black Sox. Furthermore, the allowing of the Astros to keep the title is yet another reason.

It’s safe to say that the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal has caused significant damage to baseball. And it’s going to take time for the MLB to recover from the whole thing.
