Real Madrid: Is Eden Hazard’s First Season Officially A Disaster?

For the third time this season, Eden Hazard is facing another injury spell. This time it’s a broken ankle. Real Madrid is about to face Manchester City in their first leg of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions Round of 16. Hazard is officially out of the clash. The woes for Real Madrid continue to worsen.

The injury occurred in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Levante. In Real Madrid’s case, what rubs salt in the wound is that this injury occurred just six days after Hazard returned from a previous ankle injury that put him on the shelf for nearly three months. Furthermore, the injury occurs on the same ankle. He’ll miss at least three months.

It’s safe to say that Real Madrid is in quite a bit of a predicament. Aside from their first clash with Manchester City, Real Madrid is taking on Barcelona in the El Classico clash. Hazard won’t participate in either.

Is Hazard Officially A Bust?

Not quite. His first season with Real Madrid is definitely a disaster due to the injuries and his struggles on the pitch. However, it’s too early to declare Hazard a bust, because it’s only one season. Overall, he’s just having a disastrous season and it happens.

At this point, if Real Madrid decides to deactivate him for the rest of the season, it may be the right call. Hazard joined Real Madrid on a transfer fee of €100 million. The club can’t afford to let such a huge investment go to waste. Therefore, they’re going to need Hazard to be more than 100 percent by the time he’s cleared to play again. In Hazard’s case, it would be wiser for him to sit out for the rest of the season. He can’t risk further injury aggravations. Both Real Madrid and Hazard can’t afford any more risks.

With Hazard out, Real Madrid still has useful weapons. The likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, and Isco all need to step it up. Luka Jovic may be relied upon to fill in for Hazard. The same thing goes with Rodrygo although lately he’s been absent from matchday squads. Rodrygo is ineligible for Real Madrid’s upcoming clash with Barcelona, however, he’s eligible for the clash against Manchester City. In Real Madrid’s case, it would be wise to allow Rodrygo and Jovic to play against Manchester City. The youngsters need to get more playing time for future preparations. It’s all about experience and having a Plan B. Real Madrid has deep depth and they have to take advantage of it.

Hazard’s latest injury also puts his participation at Euro 2020 in serious jeopardy. However, if Hazard is cleared to play for the tournament and is selected to represent Belgium, it’ll allow him to shake off the rust, regain confidence and motivation and ultimately help him prepare for his next season with Real Madrid. At this point, as far as his career goes, it depends on if he can stay healthy or not.
